Militant Iranian students seize the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 90 hostages. Later some of the hostages, including women and non-Americans, are released.
In December, the wife of one of the hostages places a yellow ribbon around a tree at her home in Maryland. Within a short time, millions of Americans follow suit.
The yellow symbols of freedom stay in place until the remaining hostages are released 444 days later.
