The Senate establishes a Committee to investigate the scandal and uncover the existence of secret White House tape recordings. The Supreme Court orders Nixon to release the tapes which implicate him in the Watergate cover-up.

A malfunction in the cooling system of the Unit 2 reactor led to a partial meltdown of the reactor's core. Over 90% of the core was damaged and 52% melted down.

According to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, another 30 minutes would have resulted in irreversable meltdown.

November 4, 1979

Militant Iranian students seize the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 90 hostages. Later some of the hostages, including women and non-Americans, are released.

 

In December, the wife of one of the hostages places a yellow ribbon around a tree at her home in Maryland. Within a short time, millions of Americans follow suit.

 

The yellow symbols of freedom stay in place until the remaining hostages are released 444 days later.
